What Are Armyworms?

Despite their name, armyworms aren’t worms at all – they are caterpillars (larvae) of a small brownish moth commonly known as the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). These caterpillars are usually green, brown, or nearly black with pale stripes along their body and a distinct upside-down “Y” marking on their head. They grow to about 1–1½ inches long and often feed in hordes of dozens or hundreds, which is how they earned the name armyworm – large infestations can resemble an army marching across your turf.

Once eggs hatch, the armyworm larvae begin voraciously eating grass blades. As they grow, their appetite becomes enormous. Most of the damage is done by the larger, late-stage caterpillars in the last few days of their feeding.
