Why High pH Soil Is One of the Biggest Problems for Austin Lawns

By Kyle Caldwell, Owner & Agronomist, Century Outdoor Services | Austin, TX

If you’ve lived in the Austin area long enough, you’ve probably noticed something frustrating about lawns here. One yard can look thick, dark green, and healthy, while the neighbor’s lawn struggles with thin turf, poor color, weeds, and dry spots — even when both are being watered and fertilized.

As the owner and agronomist at Century Outdoor Services, I can tell you that one of the biggest reasons for this is something most homeowners never think about: soil pH.

In Austin and throughout Central Texas, our soil conditions are naturally difficult for turfgrass. High pH soils, limestone-heavy ground, and alkaline irrigation water create an environment where nutrients become tied up and unavailable to the lawn. That means homeowners can spend money on fertilizer and still not get the results they expect.

This is one of the biggest lawn challenges we deal with every day across Austin, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and surrounding areas.

In the video I recently made for Century, I explained why our local soil causes so many lawn problems and what homeowners can do to improve turf health long-term.

How High pH Soil Affects Your Lawn

One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is thinking fertilizer alone fixes lawn problems.

I see this all the time in Austin. Someone applies fertilizer, waters regularly, and still has weak turf with poor color and slow growth.

The issue often isn’t the fertilizer itself.

The issue is that the nutrients are getting “locked up” in the soil because of the high pH.

When soil becomes too alkaline, nutrients like iron, manganese, phosphorus, and even nitrogen become harder for the grass plant to absorb. The nutrients may technically be present in the soil, but the turfgrass cannot efficiently take them in.

That’s why you can have a soil test showing good nutrient levels while the lawn still looks unhealthy.

At Century Outdoor Services Lawn Care Programs, we always look at the full picture:

  • Soil conditions
  • Irrigation practices
  • Organic matter levels
  • Turf density
  • Drainage
  • Water penetration
  • Seasonal stress
  • Nutrient availability

Healthy turf starts below the surface.

We have been offering our services to homeowners in Austin, TX and throughout the surrounding areas since 2013.

Hydrophobic Soil: Another Big Problem in Central Texas

High pH soils also contribute to another issue we see constantly in Austin lawns: hydrophobic soil.

Hydrophobic soil means water struggles to penetrate the ground properly.

Instead of soaking into the root zone, the water may:

  • Bead up on the surface
  • Run off the lawn
  • Evaporate quickly
  • Create dry patches
  • Leave roots under-watered

This becomes a major problem during Austin summers when temperatures stay extremely high for extended periods.

Many homeowners think they simply need more irrigation, but if the soil profile is repelling water, adding more water often does not solve the issue.

That’s why we focus heavily on improving the soil itself rather than just increasing fertilizer or watering frequency.

Why Lawns Look Better After Rain in Austin

One of the things homeowners notice every year is how much greener and healthier lawns look after a heavy rainstorm.

There’s actually a scientific reason for that.

Rainwater is typically much more neutral or slightly acidic compared to our irrigation water.

When rain moves through high pH soil, it temporarily helps release nutrients that were previously tied up. Those nutrients suddenly become available to the turfgrass, and the lawn responds with:

  • Improved color
  • Faster growth
  • Better density
  • Stronger recovery
  • Increased vigor

At the same time, heavy rainfall helps flush salts and sodium deeper into the soil profile.

This is one reason lawns often “perk up” naturally after rain events across Central Texas.

Temporary Solutions for High pH Lawns

There are a few short-term ways to improve nutrient availability in Austin lawns.

One common option is sulfur applications. Sulfur can temporarily lower soil pH and help unlock nutrients.

Another tool we sometimes use is ammonium sulfate fertilizer. Because it contains sulfur, it can help acidify the soil slightly while also feeding the turfgrass.

You’ll often see a quick green-up response after these treatments because nutrients suddenly become more available to the plant.

However, these are temporary improvements.

In Austin, the high pH conditions always return because of the limestone soil and alkaline irrigation water. That means lawn care here is less about permanently “fixing” the soil and more about consistently managing and mitigating the conditions.

The Best Long-Term Solution: Improving the Soil

In my experience, the best long-term improvement for Austin lawns is adding quality organic matter back into the soil.

This can be done through:

  • Compost topdressing
  • Soil amendments
  • Organic matter additions
  • Improved microbial activity
  • Better soil structure management

Topdressing with quality compost each year can slowly improve the soil profile over time.

Benefits include:

  • Better water retention
  • Improved nutrient availability
  • Increased microbial activity
  • Reduced compaction
  • Lower soil stress
  • Better root development
  • Improved turf density

This is one of the most overlooked lawn services in Austin, but it can make a dramatic difference long-term.

The key is using a quality compost source. As I mentioned in the video, not all compost products are equal.

Kyle and Jenna Caldwell, owners of Century Outdoor Services

Austin lawns are not the same as lawns in other parts of the country.

What works in acidic soils up north often performs poorly here because Central Texas soil behaves completely differently.

That’s why local experience matters.

At Century Outdoor Services, we have spent years building lawn care programs specifically around the challenges of Austin-area turfgrass. From high pH soils to summer heat stress and water management, every treatment we apply is designed for our local conditions.

As an owner and agronomist, I believe great lawn care starts with understanding the science behind the soil.

If you improve the soil, everything else in the lawn improves with it.
